WhatsApp Releasing Companion Mode for Android Beta Testers

WhatsApp debuts Companion Mode, allowing account linking to up to 4 devices for seamless multi-device chatting.

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature called Companion Mode for Android beta users. This feature lets individuals link their WhatsApp account to up to four devices, including smartphones and tablets, enabling a seamless multi-device experience. Previously, this feature was limited to Mac and PC users to link their WhatsApp account of a computer.

Companion Mode: Breaking Boundaries

Initially limited to a select group of beta testers, Companion Mode is now available to all Android beta users with version 2.23.8.2 and above. To access this feature, users must enroll in the WhatsApp beta program. With Companion Mode, users no longer need an active internet connection on their primary device to access chats on linked devices.

How to Use Companion Mode

To link an additional Android device, users should follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business beta from the Google Play Store on the secondary device.
  2. On the registration screen, tap the overflow menu and select “Link a device.”
  3. Open WhatsApp on the primary device, and go to Settings > Linked devices.
  4. Scan the QR code to link the secondary device.

Once linked, chat history will sync across all devices, providing a seamless experience. Some features, like managing broadcast lists and posting status updates, may not be available on linked devices. However, end-to-end encryption is maintained for messages and calls across all devices.

iOS Users to Wait for Companion Mode

Currently, Companion Mode is exclusive to Android beta users. WhatsApp has not disclosed when the feature will become available for iOS users. However, the company generally releases updates simultaneously for both platforms.

As WhatsApp continues to enhance its user experience, Companion Mode is a welcome addition for those seeking a seamless multi-device experience.
